Biography and Contact Information
Emily John resides in the New York City area where she performs regularly as a freelance harpist with regional orchestras, choirs, and for private events. Performing professionally since 1992, Ms. John has performed in many exciting venues including Merkin Concert Hall, Rose Theater (Jazz at Lincoln Center), Riverside Church, Symphony Space and more. Recent performance highlights include the premiere of Edward Smaldone’s Cantare di amore for harp, soprano and flute, in Merkin Concert Hall as well as performing in the orchestra for the world premiere of Bruce Saylor’s chamber opera, The Image Maker. Recent corporate work includes performances for Brooks Brothers, Barneys of New York, New York Road Runners, Bulgari, as well as many private firms and companies. In addition to her experience as a harpist, Emily is an active singer and conductor in the NY area. For over a decade Ms. John performed live harp music in neo-natal intensive care units in the North-Shore LIJ System. She serves on the adjunct faculties of Queens College – CUNY and the Special Music School at the Kaufman Center. Past conducting appointments include The Amadeus Chorale, the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College, and the Mineola Choral Society. Emily holds a degree from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) where she studied with Ms. Kathleen Bride. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed by groups as diverse as the Orleans All-County Elementary Chorus, the Mineola Choral Society, Bella Voce Singers (Brooklyn, NY) and regional high school choirs. Her scholarly publications include a recent article on works for choir and harp in the American Harp Journal, a companion article, co-authored with her husband, James John in Choral Journal (ACDA) and “By the Book: An Annotated Bibliography of Music-Based Picture Books” in General Music Today.
